Flying Cranes Julien Viard Powder Jar c1920s

Large white lacquered jewlery box decorated with gilded flying cranes against a white crackled background. Although the Viard powder box/jar is French and the jewelry box is from Japan. The lacquered box consists of a lid and a removable black lacquer tray, and it measures approximately 8 inches long, 5 inches tall and 6 inches wide. The bottom bears a U.S. Customs sticker and a sticker reading "Trademark Made of K. Yazawa Co. Shidzuoka Japan" and another sticker reading "Shidzuoka Japan".

The signed Viard glass powder box measures approximately 4 inches in diameter and standing approximately 2-1/2 inches tall. This piece of glass artwork has eight sides, each adorned with uniquely posed flying cranes (the symbol of longevity) encased in 22k gold. The top is a delicate combination of frosted glass with a clear etched floral pattern surrounding the cranes, giving it a lot of added sparkle. The bottom is stamped "J. VIARD" and "MADE IN FRANCE".

Description:  Clear glass powder box with a frosted background and molded with a raised grape and leaf motif. Its raised oval glass cabochons are highlighted with pink enamel and a pink enameled cabochon finial for the handle.

Description: Powder box in amber glass, molded with geometric fan shapes in the Egyptian Revival manner,  piqued out in light blue patina.





Viard Powder Jar c1920s - Vines and Leaves

  • Measurements: It measures approximately 6 ½ inches in diameter and 3 ¼ inches tall.
  • Markings: Etched on the inside of the lid is “J. Viard Made in France.” Molded on the bottom is “J. Viard Made in France.”

Description: Antique powder box is decorated with vines and leaves with delicate scrolling on the lid. The lid is frosted with areas left clear on the veining of the larger leaves.  The base is rounded, quite possibly hand blown into a 4-part mold. There is a horizontal band around the base on which has been molded vertical. Eight clear squares are symmetrically placed around this band. The entire base is frosted except for two small horizontal bands bracketing the embossed band.
